This two-parter was a series highlight and an instant classic. Barney's elaborate play unfolded and reached its conclusion, with Ted giving Barney his blessing, as he took Robin to the roof to stop Barney's proposal to Patrice. Initially dumbfounded and hurt, Robin realized that this was her and Barney's chance at a happily-ever-after, and she couldn't help but accept his hand in marriage. If only this were the How I Met Your Mother ending instead of what actually happened.
2 "The End of the Aisle" (Season 9, Episode 22)
Even though the entirety of How I Met Your Mother season 9 took place during Barney and Robin's wedding weekend, they didn't tie the knot until episode 22, and by that time, everything was a mess. Both have doubts about getting married and almost run off on each other, yet they do say their vows to each other in the end. This episode was bittersweet because it already seemed like Robin and Barney's future would be gut-wrenching, a feeling that will come to be proven true in the very next episode. Still, seeing Barney and Robin reach such a milestone in their relationship was satisfying.
1 "Last Forever" (Season 9, Episodes 23 & 24)
Unfortunately, Barney and Robin's happy ending didn't last, as in 2016, they called it quits. Robin had propelled her career, and she was rarely home, which meant that she didn't have time for Barney. The latter didn't like it when she was gone, but he was just as miserable when he went away with her. When they were in Argentina, they got into a fight that ended with a passionate night, followed by Barney and Robin's divorce. It was implied that they remained friendly, and the alternative How I Met Your Mother ending even suggested that they get back together at some point.
