One organization in the capital city is working to raise awareness about the relationship between gun violence and mental health. The Jackson Federation of Teachers hosted the event on Saturday at the Jackson Convention Complex. Organizers said they wanted to have an open discussion with the community to find solutions and strategies to address gun violence that is having a direct impact on the city's youth. "Unfortunately, we’re seeing more young people being a part of things like gun violence and carjackings," said President of Jackson Federation of Teachers Ebony Rice. "We’re hoping if we bring more awareness to the community of what we think may be part of the root of the problem hopefully that will help solve some of the problem."These highlights come just a week after a shooting at the University Pointe Apartments on JSU's campus where Jaylen Burns, 21, was shot and killed.Burns was set to turn 22 in November and graduate in the spring of 2024.According to Burns' father, he was trying to break up a fight when he was shot. Joshua Brown, 19, and Jamison Kelly Kr. have both been arrested in connection to the shooting death of Burns. The event also included a book giveaway and free lunch for those who attended. “If we all work together and come up with solutions and strategies, hopefully, we can bring an end to the problems that we are facing, ” said Rice.JPD has been proactive with its approach towards crime in the capital city. Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade sent a powerful message to the criminal element in a press conference on Thursday.“I have a message for the criminal element. If your vocation is criminal activity, I recommend you find another vocation. We are going to be aggressive in our efforts. It’s going to be different. It’s going to approach crime-fighting differently,” said Chief Wade.
