After 18 years of marriage, Justin Trudeau, the prime minister of Canada, and his wife Sophie are headed for a divorce post “meaningful and difficult conversations.”
In an Instagram post, the couple said that they will continue to be “a close family with deep love and respect”.
They married in Montreal in 2005, and are now parents to three children.
The pair signed a separation agreement, but PM Trudeau’s office indicated in a statement that they will still appear in public.
According to the BBC, the statement said that the family would be on vacation the following week.
“They have worked to ensure that all legal and ethical steps with regards to their decision to separate have been taken, and will continue to do so moving forward,” the statement read, as per BBC, adding they would be on holiday as a family next week.
For the “well-being” of their three children, Xavier, 15, Ella-Grace, 14, and Hadrien, 9, the couple has requested privacy.
“We remain a close family with deep love and respect for each other and for everything we have built and will continue to build,” Trudeau, 51, and Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, 48, said, according to the BBC.
Although they attended King Charles III’s coronation together in May and welcomed US President Joe Biden to Canada in March, they have been seen less regularly in the public eye in recent years.

In 2020, on their wedding anniversary, he called her “my rock, my partner, and my best friend”.
According to the Daily Mail, their relationship began with a Hollywood-worthy meet cute in a playground, as Sophie, who is now 48, was classmates and close friends with 51-year-old Justin’s younger brother, Michel — who tragically died in an avalanche in 1998, at age 23.
In their younger years, the two spent countless hours playing together and even enjoyed an innocent kiss while hiding in a closet at his family’s residence.

When they were unexpectedly chosen to co-host a gala in 2003, they rekindled their relationship after having grown apart as they started their respective careers and went their separate ways in life.
According to what he told Canadian news magazine Maclean, the prime minister actually crashed headlong into a pole on their first date because he was so preoccupied with his feelings for Sophie.
He said that night that they would “spend the rest of their lives together,” and the two “burst into tears” despite having just spent a short time together (as adults).
They told Maclean in an interview that when Justin proposed a year later, the moment he dropped down on one knee appeared to be like from out of a fairy tale. Think candles, rose petals, and all that jazz.
The wedding appeared to be right out of a storybook, with the pair arriving at the ceremony site in a $400,000 2004 Rolls Royce Phantom, and then celebrating their union in Montreal’s opulent Le St-James hotel.
The former TV anchor has said on numerous occasions that being thrown into the spotlight so fast as the wife of Canada’s Prime Minister wasn’t easy for her.
She posted a heartfelt message for Justin on their wedding anniversary last year, as well as a candid message discussing the challenges they’ve faced together.

‘Together for 19 years, married for 17, we have navigated through sunny days, heavy storms, and everything in between and it ain’t over,’ she wrote. ‘You all know I keep things honest: long-term relationships are challenging in so many ways.
On social media, Justin posted some of his own heartfelt thoughts for Sophie. He wrote, on her birthday in April, ‘Happy birthday, Sophie. There’s no one I’d rather have by my side. I love you.’
