What relatives called a toxic relationship resulted in the death of an Aston man Monday night, with her partner telling arriving officers, “I just ruined my life.”

Police charged Beth Peterson, 35, of the first block of Blackthorne Drive with stabbing Matthew Wilcox in the chest with a steak knife, killing him.

According to the criminal complaint filed by Aston Detective David Gasiorowski and Delaware County CID Detective Sean Gallagher, police were called at 7:21 p.m. to the couple’s home for the report of a stabbing related to a domestic.

The two had a fiery relationship for eight years and police had responded to the residence in the Woodbrook development in the past. The welcoming sign on the front door reads “Do All Things with Kindness you F…er”

The criminal complaint included:

Police arrived to find the victim, Matthew Wilcox, on his back in the kitchen with Peterson performing CPR. A steak knife with a white handle was in the sink. Police also saw marijuana and drug paraphernalia on the counter.

Wilcox was rushed to Crozer Chester Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 7:49 p.m.

Peterson told police Wilcox came home about 5:30 p.m. and he appeared intoxicated, which she said had been a major problem in their relationship.

As she has done in the past, Peterson asked Wilcox’s mother to come over. When the mother arrived, Wilcox began to argue with the mother, who eventually left the home, Peterson told police.

After the mother left, Wilcox came after her while she was in the kitchen and she stabbed him, Peterson said.

Doctors at Crozer said the victim suffered a single stab wound near the heart, and other wounds to the head and hands.

His mother

Police interviewed Wilcox’s mother, Marie Wilcox, who told police she received a text about 5:26 p.m. that included a photo of a vehicle owned by Peterson and operated by Matthew Wilcox at the time.

As the mother was driving to the residence, she received multiple calls from Peterson asking if she was on the way.

The mother said Peterson did not seem frantic, excited or upset. She was speaking in a monotone.

At the house, the mother saw her son in the living room. She went outside and spoke with Peterson, who related her frustration with her son’s alcohol abuse.

Marie Wilcox told police she then spoke to her son about his drinking problem, with Peterson chiming in periodically. At this point, the son became argumentative but never made any verbal or physical threats, the mother added.

Eventually the mother felt the situation was stable and left, last seeing her son on the porch sit down and light a cigarette.

Past problems

The couple had been together for about eight years, the mother told police. She described the relationship as toxic for both parties and she had been called numerous times by Peterson to mediate arguments.

Police have also been called to the home for past domestic disturbances.

Marie Wilcox said in the past she has heard Peterson state that she wished Matthew was dead or got into a car accident.

The mother said in the past there have been occasions where she observed scratch marks and or bruising on Matthew that he had said came from Peterson.

The set of knives

Police recovered the knife in the sink and found a set of knives on the countertop but no evidence of food being prepared.

In reviewing body cam footage from first arriving officers Peterson could be heard admitting that she stabbed Matthew in the chest and that he fell to the ground.

“I just ruined my life,” Peterson stated.

There were no signs of injury to Peterson’s hands and she never told police that she was assaulted or injured.

An officer said that Peterson was being taken to the station she said she was sorry.

‘Got out of hand’

“They are great neighbors. He was great with the kids around here. I guess they had an argument that got out of hand,” said next door neighbor Tony Mignogna. “I saw police wheeled him out doing (CPR) and they took her out in handcuffs. She’s a little tiny thing. I couldn’t picture her attacking him.”

He said the couple had talked of getting married but that never panned out.

“It’s a shocker,” Mignogna said. “Two lives ruined.”

He also wondered what would become of their two new puppies.

Peterson was arraigned Tuesday before District Judge Diane Holefelder and charged with criminal homicide, murder of the first degree, murder of the third degree and possession of an instrument of crime.

She was not eligible for bail and was remanded to the George W. Hill Correctional Facility, the Delaware County prison, with a preliminary hearing tentatively set for Sept. 6.
