Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes were ready to go public with their romance before they were outed as a couple. Now the pair are sharing how they wanted to tell the world about their love — and their divorces.
On Wednesday's episode of their Amy & T.J. Podcast, the former GMA3: What You Need to Know co-anchors answered a fan question asking why the couple didn't "go hard" against the allegations surrounding their romance when it first made news last year.
On Dec. 5, 2022, the duo were were “temporarily” removed from the daytime television program as gossip about them reached a fever pitch. And even though Robach, 50, and Holmes, 46, had drafted respective statements to explain their side of the story, they refrained from sharing them in order not to exacerbate the drama.
"Maybe it would have been better if we had [released the statements]," admitted Robach, "but we were trying to keep our jobs."
She explained, "I've never had to do press on myself," so thought it would be best to heed the advice of others around her and kept quiet.
While Robach discussed this dilemma on the podcast, Holmes pulled up the statements that never left the drafts folder.
"The email as I look in bold letters and underlined capital letters, it says 'AMY," Holmes began. then she read the statement: "My divorce is nearly finalized after we decided to separate. T.J. and I have been friends for years, and our relationship has evolved only in recent weeks. I ask for privacy for my family as we continue to heal."
Immediately after, Holmes read his own: "After a month-long separation, I'm in the final stage of my divorce, a process that has been difficult and that my family — for their sake had hoped to keep private. I have leaned on my closest friend during this painful stretch and very recently, that friendship became more. Out of respect for my family, I am requesting privacy at this time."
Robach and Holmes first sparked romance rumors on Nov. 30, 2022, after photos surfaced of them holding hands in a car during a vacation in upstate New York and cozying up at a bar in New York City. At the time, Robach was still married to actor Andrew Shue while Holmes was married to Marilee Fiebig.

On the debut episode of their Amy & T.J. Podcast, the duo described themselves as "the folks who lost the jobs we love because we love each other."
"That is the bottom line and that is why we are here now," said Holmes, while Robach noted how they've "gone through a year of hell" to end up in "the most beautiful relationship I’ve ever had in my life.”
"In the end, all of us are always rooting for love," she said. "It doesn’t always happen when you want it to happen, where you want it happen. And it's undeniable when it’s real and it’s something you have to navigate and it’s not easy."

"Relationships are hard, they’re messy, they’re not perfect, but we have fought for love, and I can say I have never been happier. I am with my best friend," she added.
Adding that he's the “happiest and healthiest that I've been in my life," Holmes continued, "Bottom line, we have not said this: I’m in love with this woman, and she’s in love with me, and we are planning a life together.”
