Rey & Kylo's Relationship Was Romantic Confirms The Last Jedi Director - Screen Rant

bilaumur.blogspot.com

Rian Johnson, Star Wars: The Last Jedi director, says that Rey and Kylo Ren's relationship was romantic. Serving as the main villain and hero of Disney's sequel trilogy, both were introduced in 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens from 2015. Through the next two films, they went on their individual and collective arcs ending with the pair teaming up against Emperor Palpatine in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Ever since their first encounter in The Force Awakens, it's clear that there's a strong connection between Kylo Ren and Rey. This was further solidified in The Last Jedi where they had regular conversations through the Force. Despite limited time to actually be together leading to the events of The Rise of Skywalker, they came into that film with a better understanding of each other. While they're from different backgrounds with different motivations, they were somehow drawn to each other as it's revealed they're part of a Force Dyad. This resulted in many predicting that there's more to their relationship than what's playing out on the screen. But since Lucasfilm never really made that clear, there's confusion as to what's really the nature of their bond is.

If Johnson is to be asked, however, the filmmaker thinks that he definitely thinks that their relationship is "romantic" and "intimate" as reported by Sariah Wilson on Twitter. Unfortunately, there's no additional context given with regard to his answer, but expect that he'll be asked more about his views on this moving forward, perhaps via a different avenue. Check out Wilson's full tweet below:

It was the kiss towards the end of The Rise of Skywalker that has made this more confusing. After successfully defeating Emperor Palpatine, Kylo Ren revived Rey by giving her his life force which worked. They then locked lips to celebrate, but before they can process what happened between them, Ben Solo died as he sacrificed his own life to save her. The novelization of the movie insisted that it wasn't romantic, but it's odd for two people to lock lips if they're not romantically attracted to each other. Granted that Star Wars is not immune to problematic kisses, but it's still a weird creative choice.

What's curious with this latest comment from Johnson is if he intended to set up a romantic relationship between Kylo Ren and Rey in Star Wars: The Last Jedi or was this purely based on what happened in the trilogy capper? It's worth noting that while the pair didn't get to spend time with each other physically, their conversations in the 2017 movie helped deepened their bond. In any case, had he been given the chance to finish Disney's sequel trilogy, perhaps he may have better defined Kylo Ren and Rey's relationship compared to how The Rise of Skywalker handled it.
