Ted Lasso: Why Sam & Rebecca's Relationship Is Bad For The Team - Screen Rant

Warning: Contains spoilers for Ted Lasso season 2, episode 8.

Ted Lasso’s Sam Obisanya and Rebecca Welton have finally gotten together after flirting on Bantr for most of season 2, but while their relationship seems to be good for them, it will inevitably become bad for the team. For the first half of season 2, Rebecca was seen chatting with an anonymous mystery man on the4 dating app, who many fans believed to be Ted himself. In the end, it turned out to instead be Sam, one of AFC Richmond’s star players, kicking off a relationship that’s sure to cause problems for the club by the end of Ted Lasso season 2.

On paper, Sam and Rebecca’s relationship has a lot of problems. She’s technically his employer, giving the whole dynamic an uncomfortable power imbalance. There’s also a significant age gap between the two, as Sam is only 21. Despite all that, the series has done a convincing job of showing their relationship as equitable and mutually positive, at least so far. It seems likely that whatever obstacles might seem to stand between Sam and Rebecca can be overcome by their sheer compatibility, shared attraction, and shared respect.

But just because Sam and Rebecca’s relationship might be good for them, it won’t be good for the rest of AFC Richmond. As soon as the media finds out what’s going on, the whole team is going to be blitzed by reporters trying to stir up drama. That will make the whole locker room situation tense, and a lot of the frustration will inevitably (and somewhat justifiably) be directed at Sam. There will also be questions of whether not Sam is receiving preferential treatment, which could make the other players quite uncomfortable.

Sam and Rebecca don’t even have the option of keeping things a secret, as everyone else in the office already knows about their respective Bantr matches. Keeley will demand details, as will Sam’s friends on the team, and it won’t be long until someone uncovers the truth. It won’t help any that once the relationship gets public, Rebecca will surely draw some comparisons to her ex-husband Rupert, who also had many relationships with much younger partners.

It seems that Sam and Rebecca’s relationship will go one of two ways in Ted Lasso season 2. Either the inevitable backlash drives them apart, or they decide they care more about each other than about what people think. If it ends up being the second option, there’s a good chance that Sam could request a trade from the team to keep their relationship ethical. Whatever happens, Sam and Rebecca’s relationship has become of the most intriguing plotlines in Ted Lasso season 2.
