Herm Edwards and Jayden Daniels are like two peas in a pod. That better be in order for Arizona State football to be successful in 2020.

The Pac-12 returns this weekend and Arizona State kicks things off with a 12 p.m. ET game against USC, played at 9 a.m. local time. It’s a change but it’s 2020. With Edwards and Daniels, they enter year two together with higher expectations after an eight win season in 2019.

Speaking with FOX College Football host Rob Stone, Edwards discussed his close relationship with his sophomore quarterback.

“We don't talk about football,” Edwards said. “That's too easy. Football is way too easy. We talk about life. We talk about him becoming a leader. I talk to him about this: enjoy being a college football player. Don't go too fast. Just enjoy it. Enjoy the moments and the memories that you're going to get to make. We have to be tied at the hip. At any level, the head coach and the quarterbacks are tied at the hip. that's very important. We have to be on the same page. That's very, very important. That's what we talk about, we talk about life and certain things. He might have a question or I might ask him about (something). It's a delightful conversation every morning. He walks in and says ‘coach’ and I say ‘okay, what do we have on the agenda today?’

“Today’s conversation was ‘coach, we're getting close.’ I said ‘yeah we’re getting real close aren't we? You're getting excited you haven't played in the colosseum yet have you?’ He had a big smile on his face.”

Last season as a freshman, Daniels was 205 of 338 passing (60.7% completion percentage) for 2,943 yards, 17 touchdowns, two interceptions, 355 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns.

“ASU head coach Herm Edwards and offensive coordinator Zak Hill have made it clear that the team's offense is built around the skill set of Daniels, the reigning Pac-12 Honorable Mention Offensive Player of the Year who could help lead his team to great success and be considered a candidate for national contention if he performs to his potential,” SunDevilSource’s Trevor Booth wrote. “In the event that Daniels is injured or another unforeseen circumstance, he will be backed up by redshirt freshman walk-on quarterback Trenton Bourguet.”

College football analyst Joel Klatt believes Edwards’ coaching style is working quite well at the university. He explained on Wednesday’s edition of “The Herd with Colin Cowherd.”

“Herm has worked,” Klatt said. “They understood that the point in college football is recruiting. Within recruiting, there's really two elements that players care about. Championships and the NFL. Everything they did and built was to create a scenario where it mimicked the NFL. I am the CEO, this is what we're going to do...there are NFL style meetings. Brandon Aiyuk is having success in the NFL because he comes from an NFL style program. Kevin Sumlin and Herm Edwards were hired the same offseason. Everybody said ‘oh that's a home run for Arizona and what's Arizona state doing?’ I think it's clear Arizona State won that hiring battle.”
