Dear Dr. June: It’s complicated. I met a guy at my new job. The coworkers were teasing him because he just had a breakup. We would laugh and talk at work too, but then he left after a couple weeks and went to another job. A few weeks later, we ran into each other and he asked me out on a date. I said cool and we started seeing each other. Then his ex told him she’s almost five months pregnant. We really like each other and it looked like things were getting serious between us. I’ve even met his parents, but like I said, it’s complicated. I don’t know what to do. Signed, Blurry
Dear Blurry: Oh my! You are right. This is complicated and I can understand why you can’t see things clearly. You meet a guy. You like a guy. You have a good relationship with this guy and then there’s a glitch in the relationship. Well, obviously, your options are to continue the relationship in spite of this development or move on. That decision is based on the behavior of your boyfriend and his ex. If they can keep it together, then the two of you have a chance of keeping it together.
Your boyfriend needs to be supportive of his child while understanding the strain it can cause in your relationship. He needs to be open and honest with you. The ex-girlfriend needs to be accepting of his new relationship and not try to take advantage of her situation. As long as both parties are rational and reasonable, your relationship could still move forward. If drama starts rearing its ugly head, then that’s your sign to move on. It’s not always easy to find a good relationship, so I understand not wanting to end it. However, peace of mind is important. Don’t lose it over anyone.
