Food is, very often, a profoundly important part of our social and emotional wellbeing. It is one of life’s simplest and most delightful pleasures. It facilitates conversation and connection with loved ones. It marks celebrations and provides everyday moments of comfort and joy. And it is fundamentally important to our physical health and wellbeing. There is a vast catalogue of scientific research that links our nutritional choices to an array of health outcomes. What we eat matters.

Perhaps now, more than ever before, we are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of all these aspects of eating coming together. We may seek solace in the familiarity of favourite comfort foods, respite in the gentle actions of baking or reassurance in the domesticity of cooking-from-scratch. Yet we may also be seeking knowledge on the various ways our food choices can support and optimise our health and immune function. Perhaps with a hint more urgency and motivation than before, as we realise that this is something that we can positively influence, in a world that feels chaotic and worrisome so much of the time at the moment.

Often, however, these two aspects of eating – good nutrition and joyful comfort – are presented to us as an either/or choice. It is suggested that we can either choose joyful abandon when it comes to food, or we can choose nutritious, health-supportive meals. Yet of course, if we wish to eat well sustainably, we need to find a place of flexibility where we can hold both of these functions of food together with appropriate balance given between them.

When we approach healthy eating like this, allowing space for food to still nourish our mental health and social wellbeing (which, let’s be honest, is so incredibly important in a time like now), that familiar sense of worry, deprivation or fear of failure around making dietary changes also dissipates. We realise that eating better is about gentle shifts rather than grandiose about-turns. That it was never an all-or-nothing dichotomy, but instead a gentle dial between eating purely for health and purely for pleasure, that we can constantly tweak to meet our changing needs with kindness.

So how can we start to work towards this state of balance? We can begin by committing to learning the basics of nutrition, so that we can start to make informed food choices that nourish our bodies – without resorting to fads or restrictive diets. We can prioritise taking the time to shop, cook and sit down to enjoy our meals at the table, and to allow ourselves the space to take things slowly (not believing we are somehow doing it ‘wrong’ when we don’t achieve impossible miracles promised by headlines or book titles). And we can remind ourselves that often, nourishing food can also be comforting, delicious, joyful food too. There’s nothing I love more than a big bowl of red lentil dahl on a cold night, or a roast chicken served with a pile of seasonal vegetables, drizzled in good olive oil. This balance creates the joy of healthy eating, and is something I fervently believe is more necessary now than ever before.
